Obituary for Robert D. Meerschaert

Age 87. At peace December 31, 2018. Loving husband of Patti for 50 years. Beloved father of Daniel and John (Bonnie) Meerschaert. Further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his dear siblings; George, Ralph, and Joan.

Memorial gathering at Shorehaven "Chapel" , 1305 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Oconomowoc on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral Service 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin (www.assew.org).

Bob was born at home in Cudahy, WI on October 17, 1931 to George and Sally Meerschaert. He attended Holy Family elementary school and graduated from Cudahy High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, including a memorable assignment to Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he attended UW-Whitewater and graduated in 1960 with a BS degree in Education. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college. He was an excellent basketball player and all-around athlete, both in the Air Force and at UW-Whitewater.

Bob was a passionate and accomplished science teacher in Milwaukee for 30 years from 1961 to 1991 - teaching biology, chemistry, and physical science at Kosciuszko Junior High School, Audubon Junior High School, and Bay View High School. He was the Science Department Chairman at Bay View and was proud to win the Bearman Outstanding Teacher Award in 1985. He wanted to see all of his students succeed, especially students with disabilities.

Patti was the love of Bob's life. They met in the fall of 1967 and were married on February 24, 1968. Bob loved his family above everything else. He would do anything for Patti, Dan, John, his siblings, and the rest of his extended family. Patti and Bob were amazing gardeners and enjoyed spending time outdoors. The family spent summer vacations at a cottage on Indian Lake near Manistique, MI where Bob taught his boys how to fish and about the local plants and animals.

Patti and Bob founded the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin (ASSEW) after their son Dan was diagnosed with autism in the early 1970s. ASSEW has helped thousands of families over the years - fulfilling its mission to improve the lives of all affected by autism and serve as the primary local resource for critical information. The legacy of the organization Patti and Bob started lives on and will help many more families in the future.

The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Shorehaven and Vitas Hospice for the loving care they provided to Bob.
