Barbara, age 75, passed away peacefully on May 8th, with her brother Joey at her side. Her beautiful smile and wonderful sense of humor will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Barbara faced challenges from the very beginning, arriving at a time when little was understood about autism. Despite those challenges, she lived life with joy, determination, and an incredible memory. Barbara knew every birthday, anniversary, and bus route by heart. For many years, she could often be found riding the bus to some of her favorite places — Southridge Mall, Northridge Mall, Grand Avenue Mall, and Mayfair Mall. In recent years, she especially enjoyed her regular visits to Southridge.
Barbara’s love for her family was immeasurable. She always looked forward to her weekly rides with her brother Joey, traveling to places such as Sheboygan, Fort Atkinson, and Lake Geneva. One of her favorite traditions was stopping for lunch at Chubby's for a patty melt — no onions, of course.
Barbara is reunited in peace with her loving parents, Joseph Sr. and Ruth (Switalski); her brothers Bobby and Brad; and many beloved grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She leaves behind her caring and devoted brother Joseph Jr.; sister-in-law Jennifer; nephew Joey (III); niece Sofia; and many cherished cousins.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers — Colleen, Verneva, Kim, and Pat — as well as her case worker Michelle. Each of you meant so much to Barbara and to her family.
May she rest in peace.
A private gathering will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Autism Speaks.
