Bernice M. Nevel was born on August 10, 1918 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Mathilda Turinske and Keroll Treder. Bernice was an only child, raised by Mathilda and her husband, Joe Baum. Being a very private person she has never told her family the details of her childhood or the story of her biological father and therefore it has been left a mystery to her family. The one childhood memory she has shared is that to get her driver's license all she needed to do was drive to the police station and they issued her a license.Bernice first married Alfred E. Huth and had three children, Thomas Lee, born on May 8, 1940, Kathleen Lydia, born on April 20, 1943 and Alfred Lee (also known as Lee or Arlo) Huth born on May 5, 1951. She lost her first son, Thomas on December 24, 2006. Her youngest, Lee died on November 17, 2011. With the death of each of her sons she said, "You should never out live your children." The loss of her son's was a very difficult time. When the children were growing up, her husband worked at Schlitz brewery and she worked at Kroger foods in the candy department, where she must have gotten her love for sweets, especially chocolate. Bernice was divorced from Alfred and took a job in the office at Miller Compressing Company, where she met Clarence Nevel, who owned a scrap yard. In later years, Bernice would work at Buddy Squirrel at Southridge.Clarence was a very persistent man and finally convinced Bernice to marry him. He had a cottage on Pelican Lake, called Someday where they enjoyed fishing and playing cards, mainly Sheepshead, together. They would later retire to "Someday" for a short time, but found they wanted to be closer to their family and moved back to the Milwaukee area. She has outlived both of her husbands.Bernice is the matriarch of five generations. She has five grandchildren, Kelly Polson, Sherry Laske, Cara Schmitt, Don Rozwick and Heather Protzman. She also has eleven great grandchildren, Ileia, Chandler, Madison, Gabrielle, Jacob, Tara, Brittney, Austin, Katelyn, Alyssa and Olyvia, and six great, great grandchildren, Alana, Brianna, Julianna, Hannah, Mariah, and Hailey. They are all very blessed to have the opportunity to know Bernice. There are two things she loves to collect: owls and dachshunds. We don't know why she likes owls, but her passion for dachshunds comes from a family pet named Willy that her children had growing up.Bernice is currently enjoying her stay at Clement Manor and most especially bantering with the staff. She is very determined and still tries to do things on her own. She looks forward to visits from her family and the occasional hamburger and shake brought in for lunch, a fish fry on Friday is also a good treat.
