Obituary

Charles M Haakma, “Chuck” “Charlie”, of Mt. Pleasant, WI, passed away on July 3, 2026, at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Lorraine, his sister Karen, and his very special friend Judy. Chuck is survived by his sister Laurelle; his cousin Barbara; his nieces Cynthia, Pamela, Heather, and Brenda; his nephews Wesley and David; and 14 great-nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by his Army brother Gary, his lifelong friend Marvin, and the many many friends he accumulated through the years.

Chuck was a veteran of the Army, Army Reserves, and the National Guard with over 20 years of service. His time in the military left him with 100% service-connected disability, yet he was so proud of his service. In November of 2024, he lived a dream of taking the Honor Flight with his niece Pam. He spent the whole day smiling and happy, and kept the photo book close to commemorate the special time. This can also be remembered as the only day in recent memory that he did not wear his fishing vest.

In February of 2026, Charlie was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer that left him with limited treatment options. Despite the challenges in life that he faced, he found joy in interacting with people. He enjoyed spending time with his family and celebrating holidays in the company of others. Those close to him will remember him as a “bargain hunter”, and some may even affectionately say “hoarder”. He was always looking for a bargain, and this was often used as a way to help others in times of need.

Chuck loved being taken care of and being around others, which helped him enjoy his time at Luther Manor in his later months. His family would like to thank the staff at Luther Manor for their time with Chuck, as well as the healthcare professionals at the VA and those who cared for him on hospice.

A memorial celebration for Charles is being held in the coming months. Please re-visit this site for further details.

All who are able are invited to send memorial donations to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.
