Cynthia Brooke Swinney (née Benson) of Greenfield, WI passed away due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis on July 2, 2023. She was 74 years old.
Born on April 2, 1949 to Joan and Jerome Benson of Midland, MI, she was the second of five children. For as long as she could remember, Brooke always preferred her middle name and that is how her family and friends always knew her.
While still in high school, she had the great fortune of meeting her soulmate and lifetime partner, Danny Swinney, at the local dancehall. He was tall and he could "fast dance", the two most important qualities a suitor could possess in the mid-late 60's. The couple wed on October 19, 1968 and loved each other completely for the remainder of their lives.
Dan had joined the Air Force and the pair moved from coast to coast and spots in between before finally settling in Houston, Texas. While there, Brooke gave birth to their first child, Amy, and shortly thereafter the family relocated again to Waukesha, WI. They would spend the next 20 years building a loving home on East Avenue, giving birth to three more children, Stephanie, Katie, and Colin.
Brooke became a successful Realtor with varied roles in Sales Management working first at Coldwell Banker and then Wauwatosa Realty (now Shorewest) where her colleagues established the "Brooke Swinney Award" which continues to be awarded yearly to recognize those who show, "courageous spirit, professional service and dedication." She retired in 1999 when she and Dan moved back to Midland, MI. After Dan passed away on August 10, 2011, Brooke took a few years before finally settling in Greenfield, WI to be closer to her children.
She was an amazing, kind and sweet woman who could seemingly remember every moment (and the exact date) to all of her life's cherished memories. As her mother Joan described once, she had an "astounding ability to make things beautiful." She loved to garden and craft and put together a charming and comfortable home. When she passed, Brooke was showered with love while surrounded by each of her children. She will be missed greatly.
Brooke was preceded in death by her parents, Joan and Jerome, and her husband, Dan. She is survived by her siblings, Greg, Debbie, Pam, and Chris, her children, Amy, Stephanie, Katie, and Colin (spouse Katy), as well as her three beautiful granddaughters, Sydney, Rosianna, and Neko.
Please stop by Michael's Restaurant, 1400 S. Grand Avenue, Waukesha, on Tuesday, July 18, anytime between 5pm-7pm. Have a slice of pizza and celebrate the lives of Dan and Brooke Swinney.
