David J. Whitehead, age 52, passed peacefully Tuesday in his home. David is survived by his beloved mother Nancy (Richard) Rank; three sisters, Laura (Roger) Lawton, Bonnie (Gary) Halvorsen and Karen (Randy) Haasch; two stepbrothers Dan (Donna) Rank and Tom (Debbie) Rank; and many dear nieces, nephews and loving friends. He is also survived by his cat, Wedgie, who he found as an infant wedged between two walls, rescued him, and nursed him with an eyedropper. He is 15 years old, and living happily with his new family. David is a veteran of the Gulf War, where he earned many awards, including the Navy Achievement Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal. As an E-7 Chief Petty Officer, he directed galley operations on his ship, supervising 120 workers. He was well respected by his colleagues. His tour took him around the world, but his heart has stayed at Subic Bay PI. After retiring from the Navy, David became a Postal Carrier, and a community advocate in Coshocton, OH. His success in the Navy and USPS can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural leadership ability. His financial, legal, and moral support of children and people in need is legendary, as he took quiet pride in his service to others. For relaxation, David loved to ride his Harley and shoot pool with friends. His playful, dry humor will be missed. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Memorial service at 7 PM followed by military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to DryHootch.org, a national veteran's advocacy organization.
