Obituary

Don Yahr passed on to eternal life on November 2, 2012 under the care of Allay Hospice Care. He was 84. Don was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 14, 1928, the son of Edmund and Hope Yahr. His father died when he was just four years old, and he lived with his mother in Neenah until moving to Shawano in 1940. He graduated from Shawano High School, enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and completed two years as a physical education major before transferring to University of Wisconsin (Madison) to finish his degree. He later earned Master's Degrees in Physical Education and Educational Administration. It was while in Madison that he married the love of his life, Barbara Vomastic. During the early years of his marriage and career, they lived in Milwaukee, Prairie du Sac, and Jefferson, where he served as physical education teacher, science teacher, wrestling and football coach. In 1959, Don and Barb and their three young children moved to Muskego, where Don served for 16 years as physical education teacher, football coach, wrestling coach, athletic director, and assistant principal. It was his excellence as a wrestling coach for which he is honored in the George Martin Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. In 1975, Don took his administrative career to a new level as the principal at Palmyra High School. Three years later, he took his last education position as the principal of Whitnall High School. In 1984, he retired from education and worked as a financial planner for New York Life until his full retirement in 1990. He was an active civic member, serving on the Muskego Planning Commission, as Director of the Park and Recreation Board, and on the Board of Directors for the Southwest Milwaukee YMCA, and 1990 was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Milwaukee Metropolitan YMCA. He was active in the Little Muskego Yacht Club and served on the South Shore Yacht Club Board of Directors. Don had a zest for life that extended to everyone who knew him. He was a dynamic, inspiring coach and complete family man. He enjoyed all sports, flying, camping, and traveling. His sense of adventure was shared with his family through summer camping trips, skiing in the winter, and sailing, which was his passion, and most cannot remember a time when Don did not own a sailboat. From an 8" Snipe in the 1950's to the 36' Cape Dory he last owned, he was happiest when with on the water. In 1993, he and Barb spent a year living aboard "Orion", sailing from Paducah, Kentucky, to the Bahamas and back through the New York Harbor into the Great Lakes to South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. Additionally, Don and Barb traveled widely throughout the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska) and three additional continents. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Hope Yahr, his stepfather, Raymond Menning, and two siblings, Harriet Dorrans and Charles Yahr. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara (Vomastic)Yahr, his brother Richard (Judy) Menning, three children, Jim (Lorraine Davis), Steve (Shirley), and Kathy (Don Winkelman), five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9-11 A.M. on Saturday, November 10th at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. The family is requesting that memorials be donated to the National Parkinson's Foundation or a charity of your choice.
