of Greenfield, Wisconsin, age 94, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at home after days of progressive weakness.Ed was born on the home farm near Lynxville, WI on October 7, 1923 to William and Clara (Stluka) Ertel.Ed graduated from Seneca High School in 1941. He farmed for 10 years with his parents, and then worked as a self-employed electrician for 10 years. He married Darlene Withee on June 9, 1962, attended school in Chicago, and graduated in 1964 from DeVry Technical Institute with an Associates Degree in electronics. They were blessed with 3 children: Dana, Daniel and Nancy. He was employed by Kearney & Trecker for 27 years, traveling throughout the United States for 9 years to install and repair huge tape-controlled machines. Ed enjoyed many hobbies and pastimes including quilting, building musical instruments, listening to music, making original Christmas ornaments, tending to the vegetable garden, taking bus trips, attending 15 Elderhostels, writing his life stories, reading from his Kindle, and later listening to audio books. His faith in Christ was lived out daily, reflected in his deep and meaningful prayers. He treasured his therapy dog, Ginger, who loved to sit on his lap.In 2014, he fell at home resulting in a spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic. For the next 3 ½ years he was able to continue to live at home with his loving wife attending to his needs. Ed's most often spoken words were, "Thank you!" He was especially close to his sister, talking to her almost daily after his accident. He is remembered by his wife Darlene, daughter Dana (Roy) Myers of San Antonio, TX, son Dan (Ann Kuchta) Ertel of Stone Bank, WI, and daughter Nancy (Anthony) Plack of Ashippun, WI, 8 grandchildren: Clara and Peter Myers; Jacob, Morgan and Madison Ertel; and Naomi, Hannah and Edison Plack, a niece Lois (Larry) Thompson, a nephew Steve (Lynn) Schreck, and brothers/sisters-in-law Del Schreck, Howard (Sammy) Withee, Ray (Beth) Withee, PatWithee, Paul Derrer, and Don Orlowski.Ed was preceded in death by his parents William and Clara Ertel, sister Wilma Schreck, brothers/sisters-in-law Robert Withee, Mary & Bill Yerke, JoAnn Orlowski, and Margene Derrer.Ed's memorial service will be Saturday November, 18th at Redeemer Evangelical Free Church, located at 7735 W. Howard Avenue, with visitation at 10 am, service at 11 am, and lunch to follow at the church.Memorials are suggested to the food pantry at Redeemer Evangelical Free Church in Milwaukee, WI.
