Edwin "Ed, Fidel, Blacky and Coach" Medina Sr., aged 80, entered eternal life on February 27th.
Beloved Husband of 55 years to Lily, who predeceased him in 2020. Cherished father of Edwin Jr. (Susan) and Vicky (Ken) Robertson. Devoted grandfather of Jasmine (Jesus) Mercado, Janelle (DeAngelo) Ilion and Marissa Robertson. Sweet great-grandfather to Danicia and Vicente Balderas and JJ and Lily Mercado with Janelle's bundle of joy due on Good Friday.
Born on April 2, 1944, to Serafin Medina & Verena Rivera in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. After widowhood, Verena married Felix Serrano. The family moved to Milwaukee when Edwin was in high school, which is when he met his true love, Lily.
He was the youngest sibling of Olga (Ramiro) Vara, the late Israel (Laura) Medina and Roberto Medina. He also enjoyed relationships with all of his wife's brothers and sisters, including Thomas Jr. (Caroline), Camila (Geronimo), Joey, Ketta, Mary, Alonzo, Dorina, Ricky, Lucio, Archie (Becky), Anita (Richard), Armin and Felisa.
As a man of faith, Edwin volunteered many hours to Holy Trinity-Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary. For decades, he dedicated his time and energy to the set-up and take down of the annual church festival. He was one of the Three Kings for the fiesta del Dia de los Tres Reyes in the first celebration at Schoenstatt, and for many years thereafter.
Edwin was a lifelong athlete. He was an extremely talented boxer in his youth. He was a two-time Wisconsin Golden Gloves Champion who "hung up the gloves" to become a family man after marriage and the arrival of Eddie and Vicky. He cherished his family with all his heart. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, and uncle.
His kind, calm and positive demeanor touched all those who crossed his path.
As a boxing aficionado, he used his talents as a coach for many years at the United Community Center. He trained and inspired countless aspiring boxers to reach for the stars in and out of the ring. He emphasized self-discipline, commitment, patience and perseverance. He was a role model and mentor to many!
Edwin had a strong work ethic and retired from Rexnord Manufacturing. After retirement, he continued working as a boxing coach at the United Community Center.
He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends. Edwin's life was defined by his devotion to family and church. His sense of humor, wisdom, kindness, laughter and joy of life will be missed.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 7 at Hartson Funeral Home, 11111 W. Janesville Rd., Hales Corner, 53130, from 10 AM to Noon followed by a funeral service.
