Obituary

Ellen M. Luhm, passed away peacefully at her home February 7, 2024, at the age of 101. She was born on a farm to Walter and Helen Ode on November 25, 1922, in Waukesha County. The family move to Milwaukee during the depression in the 1930's where her father sought employment. Though being nicknamed "Mousey" due to her shyness, she still graduated from South Division High School, took a job at Dunn and Bradstreet, then at the urging of her uncle Art, Ellen and her sister Gladys both took jobs at Cutler and Hammer. She married Arnold (Arnie) Luhm after he returned from serving in the military during World War II. They were fortunate enough to have celebrated 70 years if marriage.

Ellen was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, Walter and Shirley, Roland and Jane, Gladys and Dave, her daughter-in-law Debbie, her eldest son Robert and her devoted husband Arnold. A proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her children Gary (Kate), Todd (Debbie), Ned (Sheri) and Lori (Larry) Stewart; her grandchildren Todd Jr., Tyler (Melissa), Mathew (Clarissa), Nikki, Max and Claire, and her great-grandchildren Tatianna, Melani, Gabriel, Isaiah, Nektarios, Yosef and Raphael.

When asked what she was most proud of she unhesitatingly said "her children." Ellen will be remembered for the devotion she displayed towards her family. Her joy in hosting holiday dinners and celebrations. She considered herself a homemaker, overcame her shyness to urge Arnold to start A & L Tool and Die Supply Co. as a means of getting off second shift where she also worked as an unpaid part time employee. She found satisfaction in supporting her children, baby sitting for grandchildren, managing the household, not just preparing healthy meals, she was a den mother, later chauffeuring kids to scouting, summer camps, sports practice, games and swim meets, dance rehearsals, music lessons, planning summer vacations, horseback riding, horse events, and cheering at horse shows.

Her hobbies included oil painting, ceramics, and Japanese flower arranging - Ikabana, in which she had won several awards. Ellen loved to sew, making practical clothes for herself and family in the early years of marriage, and later costumes, and a ring bearers dress worn by her granddaughter. She taught that same granddaughter to sew with enough confidence that she sewed her own prom dress. Though Ellen was not a participant of any sports and never learned to ride a bicycle, she did become a practitioner of Hatha Yoga during her middle years, striving to be her best, and living as an example for future generations to emulate.

A private Service was held at the time of her passing. A celebration of her life and memories has been scheduled for Wednesday May 29th at 12 noon, to be held at 12415 West Grange Ave., New Berlin, WI. 53151. (Drive around the barn and down to the lake, there's parking by the pavilion.) Lunch to be served at 1:00 pm.

Those that would like to follow to the cemetery at 3:00 pm to inter her ashes with those of her loving husband Arnold are welcome to join us. We plan on returning to the lake for a cookout, wake, bonfire, and special activities, after the brief ceremony at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery. Those wishing to honor, not just Ellen's memories, but all the family memories of this "Greatest Generation" are invited to stay and celebrate with us. Ellen was the longest living family member, the baton has officially been passed, and all those preceding this date will fondly be remembered.
