Obituary

Elna Laverne Carter  "Lee" Born March 29, 1929, Okemah, Oklahoma to Carl Hodson Carter and Gyla Moffatt Carter.  Died March 22, 2016, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After raising nine children, Lee started on her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse when she returned to school at the age of 50, earning her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse.  In the 1980s, Lee volunteered to care for AIDS patients, recognizing their need for compassion and love as well as medical care.  She preferred one-on-one patient care to hospital work, and spent most of her career as a home health nurse, taking care of abused women and the elderly.  She loved to take care of people, and continued even after she "retired", caring for her sister, Carol Farson, and her brother, Norman Carter, during their last days.  Even on the Alzheimer's and Dementia Unit at Mitchell Manor, she was always taking care of her fellow patients.Lee is survived by and is dearly missed by eight of her children: Carol Lee (Jym Mooney) Hopkins, James (Kathleen), Laurie (John) Faragher, Richard (Saundra), Jeff (Patty), Mark, Jennifer (Rick) Berkhahn, and Gary Villnow; eight grandchildren: Dylan Damkoehler, Cory Icenogle, Rachael and Zachary Berkhahn,  Hannah and Jim Hopkins, and Daniel and Alexis Villnow; and four great-grandchildren: Kara Holton, Faith and Rebekah Icenogle, and Leila Berkhahn; also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends all over the USA; her second husband, Gary Earl Villnow; and her special "birthday twin", Dorothy Morton.  Preceded in death by her beloved son Daniel Thomas ("Hop"), grandson Ian Icenogle, daughters-in-law, Karen Hopkins and Katie Villnow, and sister and brothers, Carol, Charles, Norman and Stanley and their spouses.  Also preceded in death by her first husband, James J. Hopkins. All who knew Elna/Lee at any time in her life knows she was a scamp and self-described troublemaker, feisty, independent, and she made friends anytime and everywhere.  The family is very grateful to Lee's caregivers at Mitchell Manor, especially her nurses, Nevenka, Diane, and Lucky, Patricia and the other CNAs on the Alzheimer's and Dementia Unit, and to Chaplain Tim, social worker Kelly, and nurse Patty of Allay Home & Hospice, and to her beloved friend, Maria Vega, who visited her regularly at the nursing home. We welcome your stories and memories about Lee. Memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 16 at 11:00 AM at Northwest Baptist Church, 4373 N. 92nd Street, Milwaukee, to be followed by lunch in the Fellowship Hall.
