Blair, Frank Frank Blair sat down at his computer Tuesday morning, July 5, 2011, sent off a few emails, and peacefully left this world. He died in his Shorewood home where he and his wife, Jeanmary, moved in the early 1960's, and where they raised their family. Frank was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on May 21, 1922, the only child of Oscar and Jane Blair. As a young man, he joined the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was stationed in Okinawa and trained as an airplane radio operator. He flew on many medical evacuation flights in the Pacific during WWII - an experience that influenced the rest of his life. Upon returning home, Frank enrolled at the University of New Hampshire. It was there that he met the love of his life, Jeanmary Durant. They were married on June 29, 1949. His interest in radio led to work as a disc jockey and then working with children who had hearing and expressive difficulties. He developed a passion for helping these students, and pursued a career in the new field of special education where he could help children with learning disabilities. He received his Master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University and his Doctorate from Northwestern University. After teaching at Vanderbilt in Nashville and Kent State in Ohio, he accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he taught in the School of Education. He spent 23 years at UWM, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1984. Peace and justice were key principles in Frank's life, and he spent his life advocating for the poor and less fortunate. He and his family were active in the Milwaukee fair housing marches of the 1960's, protesting the Vietnam War, and supporting the Milwaukee 14 protests of military draft policies. Even as his health was failing, he continued his advocacy by expressing his call for justice through numerous internet blogs and media editorials. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanmary in 1984. He is survived by his three daughters, Dr. Elizabeth (Marybeth Anderson) Blair, Kate Blair, and Amy (Dean) Heron. He is also survived by his much-loved grandsons, Adam, Michael, Jeffrey, and Steven. He will be missed by his close friends, Dee and Dena Hayden, and Nick Riddell, as well as his many friends and internet followers.Memorials:In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to: Casa Maria Hospitality House, 1131 North 21st Street, Milwaukee, WI 53233 http://casa-maria-worker.wikispaces.com/ Bread of Healing Clinic at Cross Lutheran Church, 1821 N. 16 St., Milwaukee, WI 53205 http://breadofhealingclinic.org/Service:A celebration of Frank's life will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 4 to 7PM, at the Astor Hotel, 924 E.
