Obituary

Gordon G. Messmer Sr. passed away, at the age of 90, peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 9:45 p.m. while under the care of Horizon Hospice, Lawlis Center in Mequon, WI.

Gordie was born in Milwaukee, WI on September 18, 1931. He had seen a lot of changes in our world and always made friends along the way. He became a father at the age of 20 to Linda (Zastrow). While stationed in Germany, during the Korean war, he met Margrit and they married in December of 1956. Some years later they had two children; Gordon Jr. and Michael. He had a long career as a semi-truck driver.

Gordie shared fond memories of times spent with family and friends. He always spoke highly of his sister, Nancy. He spoke of enjoyable trips made to Germany. Some of his hobbies consisted of being an avid outdoorsman which included hunting and fishing. He was handy and liked to work with wood and made cribbage boards in his spare time.

After retirement he continued being a very active member of the VFW Post 5716 and liked driving the military Jeep in the 4th of July New Berlin parade. He vacationed on cruises with son Mike and his wife Lynn. He partook in the Honor Flight with Gordy Jr. as his chaperone in November of 2014.

Later in life he met and married Sharon Brelle in September of 2007 and they became snowbirds spending winters in Arizona.

With Gordie becoming housebound in his later years; he appreciated the company, conversations and helpfulness of Adam Horn, a neighborhood friend.

He will always be remembered as a joyous and generous man loved by many.

The Messmer family would like to give special Thanks to the wonderful Horizon Home Hospice team for the care given to Gordie since March of 2022. He made many new friends and appreciated the advice of the Chaplain (Anthony Martin), the musical talents of Rory Bolton (Music Therapist), the care and kindness given by Jennifer Lugo (Massage Therapist), Amy Eickhorst (CNA), Sandy Oserowski (Social Worker), Juliann Stout (RN) and Erika McKee (NP).

Please come and share a favorite story, have a light snack, and a beverage in celebration of Gordie's life on Friday, July 8, 2022 at the VFW Post 5716, 17980 Beloit Road, New Berlin, WI from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
