Obituary
Helen "Carolyn" Herem (née Palmes) passed away from respiratory failure on January 29, at age 90 in Mequon, WI.
Carolyn was born in Raton, NM, on both April Fool's Day and Easter Sunday - April 1, 1934 - a red-headed, left-handed surprise child, beloved by parents Guy Harold Palmes and Helena (Funke) Palmes and four older brothers and sisters.
She had a happy childhood in Fort Collins, CO, where her father was the city manager.
She attended college at Colorado A&M, earning a BS in microbiology and eventually working in a lab. She met Air Force Airman Maynard A. Herem on a double date. He was her friend's date at the time, but Carolyn caught his eye and captured his heart, the two marrying on December 1, 1956.
Carolyn and Maynard treasured their daughter, Karen, who arrived in 1958. The family had the opportunity to live in multiple states due to the Air Force and Maynard's subsequent private-sector job, spending the bulk of Karen's childhood in Wisconsin.
Carolyn worked as a medical technologist for a time and had her own Mary Kay business. Carolyn and Maynard particularly enjoyed residing in Santa Fe, NM, and also lived in Hampton, NH, before moving to Saukville and later Jackson, WI, to be closer to Karen and her husband Dale Gass and grandchildren, Lynn (Gass) Rice and Brian Gass.
Carolyn enjoyed being a member of Ozaukee Congregational Church and serving children in the church nursery.
She loved being a great grandma to Matthias, Cassandra, and Joseph Rice and to Louis Gass.
Carolyn was a member of PEO and was so loved by her PEO sisters, wonderful neighbors, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter Karen (Dale) Gass, grandchildren Lynn (JJ) Rice and Brian (Katherine) Gass, great-grandchildren, and nieces.
A memorial service will be held on February 28, 2025, at 2PM, at Ozaukee Congregational Church, 1142 Lakefield Rd., Grafton, WI 53024.
