Obituary

Jack C. Brooks, 84, of New Berlin, Wisconsin, passed away on November 5, 2025.

Born in Hornell, New York, in 1941 to Martha and Jack Brooks, he grew up surrounded by his close-knit family.

In 1965, Jack married the love of his life, Melinda Hilton, and together they welcomed their son, Ryan (Jill Sasse), in 1972. Jack cherished his family deeply and maintained lifelong bonds with his siblings: brothers Michael (Jennifer Thompson) and Roger (Elizabeth), and sister Darlene (James) Darrow, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

It was important to Jack’s parents that he attend college, and so he pursued biology at Alfred University, the University of Texas, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, ultimately earning his Ph.D. Science was not just his profession, it was his lifelong passion. His career at Marquette University spanned decades, during which he served as a professor, scientist, and researcher. Later, Jack played a pivotal role in shaping the future of scientific education at Marquette, serving as the founding dean to help establish the College of Health Sciences. His leadership, vision, and dedication left an enduring mark on the institution and on countless students and colleagues. His discoveries in cell permeability provided foundational methods later adopted by many neurophysiologists studying exocytosis.

Outside his professional life, Jack found joy in many pursuits and was always busy and engaged. A licensed pilot, he loved flying and built two airplanes during his lifetime. In retirement, he continued to nurture his curiosity through reading, baking bread, and studying Italian. Jack and Melinda enjoyed the experience of other cultures and traveled together, including several trips to Europe.

Jack will be remembered for his sharp mind, his devotion to family, his commitment to education, and his love of friendship.
