Obituary

1928-2018 Peacefully passed away January 30th on his 90th birthday. Beloved husband for 61 years of Gretchen (Bittner). Loving father of Kathi (Ralph) Eaton, Chris Whittet, Peter Whittet, Lisa Whittet, James Whittet III, Tracie Lanterman, Jon (Rose) Whittet; proud grandfather of Nathan Eaton, Bryan (Dana) Eaton, Brad Whittet, Shelly Whittet, Laura Whittet, Shawn Rock, Jay Whittet, Brittney (Spencer) Jones, Megan McGoohan, Caitlin McGoohan, Julia Whittet, Walker Lanterman, Maxwell Whittet, Marco Whittet; and adoring great-grandfather of Carter Jones and Sutton Jones. Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Nannette Vriesman, who passed away in 1955. Jim graduated from Shorewood High School where he was an avid basketball and tennis player, known by his friends as "Smilin' Jimmy." Jim attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He also served in the Naval Reserve. His love of tennis led Jim to serve as a ball boy for Chuck Evert, who later gave him his first sales opportunity at Evert Container. Later, Jim co-founded Pioneer Container Corp. in Cedarburg, and grew the company for more than 30 years. Pioneer was Jim's pride and joy. His tours are memorable, as he knew the name of every employee and each piece of machinery. During this time Jim played tennis at The Town Club and then in retirement in Naples, FL where he and Gretchen divided their time. Jim also loved being part of the Lake Beulah Yacht Club. He served as Commodore and enjoyed sailing, playing tennis and participating in the club activities. He delighted in men's Thursday night tennis followed by dinner and Hearts. The following day, many of the men often joked that they had the "Beulah flu." Jim was a gregarious, generous and an honorable man; and his integrity was unsurpassed. He was the ultimate family man who loved his wife and family. His laughter and smile were contagious and resonate in all of our hearts. He will be deeply missed.
