96, passed away at her home in Franklin, Wisconsin, on Friday, September 22, 2017. Joan was born in Burnley, England, on December 29, 1920, to Ethel (Clapham) and Edwin Capewell. She spent her childhood and young adult life in Burnley, attending Rose Grove School and Burnley Commercial College. During World War II, Joan served with distinction in the British Royal Air Force (Coastal Command) from 1941 until the end of the war. She was stationed just north of London, and earned the rank of corporal. During the war she met and married Ervin Kemper, a U.S. serviceman from Racine who was stationed in England. After the war, Joan joined Ervin in Racine, and they had two children: Gillian (Jill) born on February 15, 1947, and David born on September 1, 1950. She was a warm, giving mother, always making sure that her children were loved and well provided for in sickness and in health. When Gillian and David were older, Joan began working at First National Bank in Racine in the accounting department and continued there until she retired at the age of 62. Joan enjoyed her work at the bank, making many lifelong friends during her employment. She met regularly with her co-workers for luncheons at Racine restaurants up until this year. In her early retirement, one of her greatest pleasures was providing care for her beloved grandsons Timothy and Todd, driving from Racine and later from Franklin to Burlington, the home of her son David and his wife Yvonne. She traveled extensively with her daughter Gillian in the United States and parts of Europe and also enjoyed visits from her brother Ernest upon his retirement. Joan was an avid reader throughout her life and loved attending movies, working on crossword puzzles, and dining out with her daughter. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ernest and his wife Margaret, and her former husband Ervin. Joan will be dearly missed by her two children, Gillian and David; her daughter-in-law Yvonne; her grandsons Timothy (Megan) and Todd; her great-granddaughter Harper; and her friends, extended family members, and acquaintances. A private family gathering will be held to remember and celebrate Joan's life. The family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to Ronald McDonald House in her honor. Finally, the family would like to thank the staff at Always Best Care and Vitas Home Hospice for the tender care given to Joan during her end of life.
