MacGillis, John D. Age 75. Born to Eternal Life on November 14, 2009, at Ruth Hospice in West Allis. Beloved husband of Louisette (deceased) and Marguerite; father of James (Sarah), Alex, and Pierre; and grandfather of Ian. Preceded in death by parents Crescent and Regina, and brother Jim. Survived by brothers Paul (Florence) and Alec (Mary); sister Mary, many nephews, nieces, and friends, and all who loved him very much. He was born September 18, 1934, in Milwaukee, to Regina Ann (nee Koperski) and Crescent Joseph MacGillis. A true son of the South Side, John attended St. Matthew's Grade School. He was a football player, champion boxer, and king of the Lourdes Ball at Don Bosco High. The tutelage of the Marianists so impressed him, that after high school, he taught with them for over 15 years in Illinois, Texas and Peru as Brother John. Upon getting married and returning to Milwaukee in 1969, he taught Spanish in the Milwaukee Public Schools for over 25 years, inspiring and supporting thousands of students. John enjoyed gardening and refinishing furniture. He was an active, dedicated member of St. Mary Catholic Faith Community, Hales Corners, devoting significant amounts of time and energy to serving the poor and needy with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. He was loved by many for his great humor, humility, intelligence, warmth, and his generous loving nature. He was a loving husband and father, a devoted teacher, a humanitarian, and an exceptionally kind man.
