Obituary

Joshua Peter Thekan

February 23, 1981 – March 9, 2026

Josh, 45, passed away peacefully surrounded by love after a courageous eight-year battle with colon cancer. A devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Josh will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, humor, and deep love for the people in his life.

Josh grew up in West Allis, Wisconsin, where he built lifelong friendships and roots that stayed with him throughout his life. He enjoyed collecting DVD movies and CDs and loved sharing his favorite films and music with family and friends. Known for his quick wit, Josh had a special talent for dropping the perfect movie quote at just the right moment, bringing laughter to those around him. He was also a lifelong Wisconsin sports fan who rarely missed cheering on the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers, and the Wisconsin Badgers.

Josh found joy in simple things and the moments that brought people together. He especially loved Christmas and the magic of the season, with a particular fondness for Christmas lights. The glow of decorated homes and the warmth of the holidays were things he looked forward to each year.

For eight years, Josh fought colon cancer with extraordinary determination. Throughout his long battle, he continued to work full time and approached each challenge with resilience and quiet courage. He faced his illness the same way he lived his life—with strength, patience, and very little complaint. Along the way, the support, encouragement, and love of family and friends meant the world to him and helped carry him through difficult days.

Josh shared a loving marriage with his wife, Katy. Their personalities balanced each other perfectly—Katy’s ambitious and driven nature complemented Josh’s patient, steady, and laid-back spirit. Together they built a life grounded in partnership, loyalty, and deep love, standing side by side through every chapter, including the challenges of Josh’s illness.

Above all else, Josh was a proud and devoted father to his young son, Corbin. Corbin was a miracle in Josh’s life and a bright light who kept him positive and fighting, bringing him immeasurable joy and purpose every day. Corbin will live on for Josh, carrying forward his love, strength, and spirit. Family and friends will make sure Corbin always knows who his daddy was and how deeply he was loved.

Josh was the beloved son of Shirley and Dennis and a caring brother to Renata and Neil (Joanna). He was also a proud uncle to his nephews Xavier, Xander, Drue, and Everett, who brought him great happiness.

He is also lovingly remembered by his extended family on Katy’s side, including Jannette; Lisa (Bob); and Sarah (Terry); nieces Aubree, Delilah, and Terry Lee; and nephews Evan and Robert. Josh is further survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Josh had a special love for animals, especially cats, which always seemed drawn to him. Friends and family often joked that he was a “cat whisperer,” as animals naturally gravitated toward his calm and gentle presence.

Those who knew Josh will remember his warmth, humor, resilience, and the steady way he showed up for the people he loved. Whether through laughter, thoughtful conversation, or simply being there when it mattered most, Josh made a lasting impact on the lives around him.

Though his life was far too short, the love he gave and the memories he created will live on through his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Like the fireworks he loved, Josh’s spirit will live on—bright, strong, and impossible to forget.

Josh is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
