Merle Henry Vetter, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Muskego, Wisconsin, on May 26, 2026.
Born on January 21, 1936, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Merle grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Special Services, with assignments in Indiana and St. Louis.
Merle dedicated his professional life to the optical industry, serving as Optical Lab Manager for Herslof Opticians. Following his retirement, he continued to share his expertise while working part-time at the Walmart Optical Center. He was widely respected for his extensive knowledge of optics and his exceptional ability to solve even the most challenging optical problems.
Outside of work, Merle found great joy in a variety of interests and hobbies. He had a lifelong love of photography and took great pleasure in capturing moments and memories through his camera lens, often helping others with their photo and video projects.
In addition, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and working on cars in his younger years. He loved airplanes and building intricate model aircraft and had a passion for designing and building electronics. After retirement, he was often found assembling extensive wooden model kits — his family's favorite being a fully working marble run.
He was also an accomplished bowler who enjoyed both the competition and camaraderie of the sport. A man of strong Christian faith, Merle was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Those who knew him will remember his kindness, generosity, and how he was always ready with a great joke. Even in his final hours, he cracked a good one.
Merle is survived by his loving wife, Christine Vetter; his son, Cameron Vetter; his daughter-in-law, Jessica Vetter; and his granddaughter, Alexandria Vetter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sophie and Henry Vetter, and his brother, James "Jim" Vetter.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burlington, Wisconsin, with a funeral service and military honors immediately following from 11:00 am to noon.
Lunch will be served from noon to 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove, Wisconsin.
Merle's family is grateful for the many friendships, kindnesses, and memories shared throughout his life. His legacy of faith, dedication, humor, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
