Obituary

Nancy (Nee Jarvis) Swartz (formerly Sullivan)Born at home in Winfield, Kansas on June 21st, 1921. She died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family on September 28th, 2017 at 6:21 a.m. at the Milwaukee Catholic Home Special Care Unit. Nancy is preceded in death by husbands William F. Swartz and Benjamin A. Sullivan, parents George L and Jess L Jarvis, brother John F Jarvis and wife Shirley, brother Richard L Jarvis and wife Jane. Loved and cherished throughout her life, Nancy is survived by daughters Lynn Sullivan Kealey of Ottawa, Canada, Gail Sullivan, Cece Sullivan and Patrice Sullivan Kildare Avery of Milwaukee, grandchildren Matthew (Angela) Kealey, Paul (Valerie) Kealey, John (Aimee) Kealey, Carolyn (David) Tanchester, Sara Bauer, and Ken Kildare; great-grandchildren Kieran, Meaghan, Emma, Adam, Joel, Jaspin, Alanna, Matilda, Winifred, Lavinia, Zach, Mary Margaret and Jordan; nieces Sarah Grace, Barbara, nephews Paul, Jeff and Bill; Dan Kealey and Wilbert Bauer, David Swartz of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and an abundance of extended family who knew and loved Nancy for her hospitality and generosity throughout the years. A true lady, Nancy was a talented pianist who studied with E. Marie Burdette, Mr. & Mrs. Crosby Adams, and Rudolph Ganz. Nancy received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Nancy later obtained her teaching certificate and enjoyed teaching kindergarten. Nancy was very proud to serve her church as a chancel choir member and church secretary until her retirement. Nancy was a piano soloist and performed with the Southwestern College orchestra in Winfriend beginning at age 7. Thereafter, in a variety of settings, Nancy accompanied music students, played for Marquette University theatre, the Immanuel Presbyterian Church chancel choir, and for numerous sing-a-longs at her home.Nancy was a highly accomplished cook and her hospitality was renowned. Nancy was a home published author of a cookbook with two editions. Favorites include Sour Cream Chocolate Cake, Oatmeal Raisin cookies made with sour cream and described as "yummy", Super Duper French Toast, Almond Overnight Cookies, English Toffee, German Sweet Chocolate Cake, sticky buns and butter horns, Jess Lynn Jarvis' Lemon Pudding and Black Bottom Pies, Lamb Curry and her famous Fried Chicken. The Terrace Avenue test kitchen produced many favorites, the most famous is Spice of Life Cake. This cake was perfected after many trials of which Dan Kealey was one of the primary testers.Nancy's house always had something for children who came to visit. Available choices included the play closet, sewing, embroidery, sand blocks, books, and percussion instruments to join in as Nancy played "March of the Siamese Children".A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 1100 N. Astor Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202 on Sunday, November 5th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Nancy's honor may be made to Immanuel Presbyterian Church, the Special Care Unit of Milwaukee Catholic Home (2330 N. Prospect Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53211), or the Southwestern College Institutional Advancement (designate Music Department, 100 College Street, Winfield, KS 67156).
