Norma Jean (Cunningham) Van Dorf of Greenfield, WI went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 1, 2019 at age 57 after a valiant battle with brain cancer. Faithful wife of 35 years to Daniel, and loving mother to sons Joseph and Elijah, she is further survived by numerous sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, and grandbabies from her spiritual family.
Born on March 14, 1962 in Omaha, NE, Norma graduated from Burke High School where she made cherished memories with friends in theater and improv groups. Norma moved to Wisconsin to attend Carroll College, and met her husband Dan through the ministry of Garfield Baptist Church's college and career group. Norma and Dan were married on June 16, 1984 at Garfield. The pride and joy of her life was being a wife and mother.
During her adult life, Norma worked for both Marriott and Harwood Medical Clinic doing administrative work, as a cake decorator for a local grocery store, and as a medical transcriptionist for several doctors. Norma briefly pursued a degree in speech-language pathology from UW Milwaukee. She Ioved words and took pride in her extensive knowledge of medical conditions and terminology.
Norma worked faithfully throughout her life in children's ministries, sponsoring 5 Day Clubs in her neighborhood, volunteering as a Sunday School teacher, writing and directing children's programs for church, and volunteering through Child Evangelism Fellowship. She cared deeply about the well-being of young women and single mothers, and throughout her life she sought out relationships where she could mentor and invest in the lives of young women. Informally she also worked as a wedding planner for friends and church family.
Norma will be remembered for her passion for theater and performing, for her classically-trained singing voice, for her skill and creativity as a cake decorator, for being a devoted wife and mother, and for being a faithful friend and a gifted conversationalist. Norma held deep faith and fought ardently her entire life for her own personal, spiritual, and emotional liberation. Knowing Norma meant being swept up in this very personal struggle on her behalf.
A service celebrating Norma's life will take place on Saturday, July 27 at Woodridge Community Church (13800 W. Howard Ave., New Berlin, WI 53151). Visitation from 9am to 11am, Service from 11am to noon.
