It is with sadness and in great celebration of her beautiful life that the family and friends of Patricia J. Jensen announce her death on November 19, 2021. Patricia is survived by her loving spouse, Sandra Graham, sisters Shayla Stanek and Kathy D'Ercole (Lou), and her brother Thomas H. Jensen (Mary Ruth), sisters-in-law Sarah Petto (Anj) and Sharon Graham, 27 nieces and nephews, 53 great nieces and nephews, 15 great great nieces and nephews, and many loving friends who will miss her dearly.
Patricia was born on July 23, 1948 to Harry and Jeanette (Considine) Jensen in Omaha, Nebraska, a place she has always thought of as home. She graduated from Ryan High School, Omaha. She joined the School Sisters of St. Francis and graduated from Alverno College in 1971. After graduating she spent several years in her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska living in the community and working as a social worker with the Sisters of Mercy doing home care visits to the low-income elderly.
She received her MBA from Tulane University in New Orleans, and joined the faculty in the School of Business at Alverno College. She served as a faculty member for over 35 years, dedicating her life's work to the education of women. She completed her Ph.D. at Case Western University where she focused her work on experiential and conversational learning.
Shortly after she returned to full time faculty work, she left the School Sisters, being called to a different path, but remained as an engaged faculty leader at the College. During her tenure as faculty Dr. Jensen taught at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
During her career Patricia authored many articles and co-authored a book on Conversational Learning, a particular interest of hers. She worked with many, many graduate students and colleagues as they prepared publications or dissertations that furthered work in sound teaching and assessment practice.
Many people, faculty, staff and students alike, benefitted from Patricia's generous sharing of this expertise as well as her consistent encouragement of their own learning. Her laughter in the hallways was infectious. Her sharing of ideas was always generous and encouraging.
Patricia shared her valuable expertise with educators across the globe. From Hong Kong to Vancouver to Amsterdam and all across the United States, she aided others in higher education to more clearly address their learners with innovative assessment models that promoted their ongoing learning, and with approaches that helped students to find ways to grasp their learning experiences and use them effectively across a broad range of occupations.
Patricia loved to travel and to have fun. From vacations with family in northern Minnesota, to camping trips and times at the cabin with friends, to world adventures in Italy, Ireland, England, Indonesia and Victoria Island she was known to say things like, "We didn't travel all this way to drink cheap wine", helping all those around her to relax and enjoy.
Her quick wit, love of learning, belief in the potential within all the women she taught, and her compassion for others are hallmarks of her career. Her generous spirit, her love and encouragement of family and friends and her care for others are hallmarks of her life. We are thankful for Dr Uyar and her amazing oncology team as well as to the Horizon Home Hospice team.
A service in her memory will be held at the Alverno College Chapel on December 4th at 3pm. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers you may donate to a scholarship in her name at Alverno College: Alumnae.Alverno.edu/jensen.
