Obituary

Apart for 10 years, Robert and Jean Diehl were reunited in heaven on Saturday, May 24, 2014, when Robert quietly slipped away. He was born in Pennsylvania, 87 years ago, and as a young teenager built radios and model airplanes. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 16 and was assigned as a radioman to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Princeton CVL-23. He flew in a TBM Avenger as a radioman/gunner and was aboard the ship on October 24, 1944, when it came under attack from the Japanese in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The ship sank that day in the Sibuyan Sea and by God's providence, Robert survived. He married his sweetheart, Jean, in 1948, and settled in the Milwaukee area. He made aviation his career and worked as an aircraft mechanic and corporate pilot for the next 50 years. He was a loving husband and father to four children, Jeffrey (Karen), Bonnie (Read) Morrison, Scott (Cheryl), and Robert (Twyla). He was grandfather to nine grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. His wife Jean passed away 10 years ago and he has pined for her ever since. Robert was a hard-working, compassionate, and honorable man. He loved and served God, his family, and his country. We will miss him greatly, but he will live in our hearts and memories until we are reunited with him in heaven. Visitation will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Funeral service at 10:30 AM followed by full military honors. Private burial in Fassett Cemetery in Edgerton, Wisconsin.
