Roger Melvin RaaschA Wisconsin native, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on October 6, 2018 in Milwaukee. He was born on January 9, 1931 in Milwaukee to Arthur and Marie Raasch. An enterprising and active young man, Roger delivered the Milwaukee Journal as a newspaper courier and loved to participate in football, track and field, and speed skating in winter on nearby Washington Park lagoon. As a varsity right tackle on the Washington High School football team, he helped the Purgolders win the state football championship in 1948. He also won many medals competing in local club speed skating events and all-city high school track and field events, specializing in discus and shot put. After graduating from WHS in 1949, Roger played football at several colleges, but those were the days before helmets had full facemasks, and unfortunately he got injured and retired from college football. While at Marquette University, he was president of the international commerce fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. He graduated from Marquette in 1955 with a BS in business administration and as a second lieutenant in the Army ROTC program. He then married Barbara Joan Kalupa just before being deployed as a company commander in the DMZ of post-war South Korea, and worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. After returning to the states, Roger worked in sales, banking and real estate. He established the Wisconsin Condominium Association in 1988, where he served as meeting coordinator and facilitator for 26 years, until 2014. Roger is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children, David Raasch (Christine), Dean Raasch (Ann), Jennifer Raash (Jeff), Julia Ubert (Steve) and seven grandchildren plus two great grandchildren. A life-long Packers fan, Roger was known for his love of family, forgiving nature, and ability to empathize with everyone he met. Special thanks go out to the wonderful caregiving staff from Hometown Hospice, Francis House and Franciscan Village. A private interment ceremony will be held at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove, WI. To honor Roger's wishes, a celebration of life will be held at 11:30am, with lunch served at 12:30pm, on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at Meyer's Restaurant, 4260 S 76th St, Greenfield, WI.
