Obituary

Rosemary Helena Selep (nee Metz) died on May 7, 2024, just short of the age of 95. Born on June 18, 1929, to her beloved parents, John J. and Rose Felsecker Metz.

Beloved mother of Roseann (Dennis) Link, Vickie, Andrew (Mary Fran Otterson), John (Eva), James, Jeanne (Carl Grisa), Thomas, Patrick and Paul Selep. Grandmother of CarriAnn (Jeremy) Peper, Lisa (Robert) Schmidt, Benjamin and Christopher (Sara) Link, Mary Elise and Mary Fiona Selep, Michael, Steven and Jean Selep, Cassaundra (Sheila) Wiest, Molly (Leo) Torres, Shannen Selep and Isabelle (Alex) Knighton, and Thomas, Anthony, Nathan and Miranda Grisa. Proud great-grandmother to Gustav and Wolfgang Peper, Cooper, Sammy and Adalyn Schmidt, Elias and Natalie Link, Gwenevere Torres and Malcolm Knighton. Further survived by other relatives and many friends. Preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Selep.

She went to Holy Angels high school and played on their basketball and volleyball teams, graduating in 1946. She graduated from Marquette University with degrees in Math and English, and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music with a degree in piano.

Right after college, in 1950, the Holy Year, she traveled by boat across the Atlantic, throughout Europe to Rome, and had a private audience with Pope Pius XII at his summer residence Castel Gondolfo.
Rosemary was very active in her home parish, St. Mary's Catholic Faith Community for over 50 years, being involved as a lector, communion minister both in church and in care homes and in the Jail ministry. She was also involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

She loved the outdoors, anything to do with nature, flower gardening, birds, and any chance to get on the water in boats.

She enjoyed traveling, both with her family to many national parks, and later internationally to many locations throughout Europe, including more exotic locations like Australia, Africa, Egypt, Israel, Peru, the Galapagos, the Amazon, and more.

One of her favorite activities involved her membership in Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), a national music fraternity. She was a longtime bellringer and played piano duets giving concerts in many local places.

Another activity that filled her days was volunteering at the Milwaukee Public Museum. She loved dinosaurs and knew everything about them. She, along with her husband and many of the kids, volunteered as part of the museum team in several summer Dig-a-Dinosaur camping expeditions to Montana, Utah and North Dakota. She then volunteered in the geology lab cleaning and preparing fossils. As a docent she enjoyed giving tours to many groups of school children in the Tropical Rain Forest, Third Planet (geology and dinosaurs), the Streets of Old Milwaukee, as well as special temporary exhibits. One of her favorite special exhibits was the Titanic exhibit where she dressed up as a lady of the period!

Once her children got a little older, she gave piano lessons out of her home, teaching her own children as well as many of the local kids.
