Roy Robert Birk, a beloved member of the Wales community, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, at the age of 81, surrounded by family and friends. He was known for his extraordinary talent on the basketball court and golf course, his witty sense of humor, and his steadfast commitment to his faith and his church.
Born on May 9, 1943 in Waukesha, Roy was the son of the late Merlin and Grace Birk. He graduated from Waukesha High (now known as Waukesha South) in 1961, where he made a lasting impact on the basketball court. The 102 points he scored in the 1961 Wisconsin State Tournament is a record that still stands today. His number 14 jersey has been retired by Waukesha South where it hangs proudly. After being asked several times, Roy humbly accepted a spot in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame on October 13, 2013.
Many will remember Roy for his kind soul and his overwhelming love for his church, Dayspring Baptist, where he was a devout and active member. It is fitting that his service will be held in the church he cared so deeply for. Roy spent many years volunteering his time and talents, helping to strengthen the church and support those in need. He will be fondly remembered by the church community, where he was affectionately known as "Mr. Roy".
Roy is survived by his children, Troy (Christine) Birk of Pewaukee; Kourtney (Scott) Widule of Waukesha; Kristy (Jeff) Richards of Menomonee Falls; and Cody Birk of Milwaukee. He is further survived by his sisters Bonnie Birk of Waukesha and Barbara Copeland of Atlanta, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Merlin and Grace, and his son Scott Birk of Austin, TX.
A visitation for Roy will be held on December 28, 2024 from 3-5 p.m. followed by a service at 5 p.m. at Dayspring Baptist Church, N14W29489 Silvernail Road, Pewaukee. Light food will be served immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Roy's memory to Dayspring Baptist Church, where a rock-climbing wall will be added to the playground in his honor.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the caregivers, friends, and members of Dayspring Baptist Church for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
