Obituary

William Thomas Tucker, son of William Theophilus (Thomas) Tucker and Shirley Audrey Virginia Holmes, died March 28, 2015 at age 72. A Wisconsin native, he was a business executive and long-time member of the Naval Reserve. He was known for being very active in his community throughout his life, particularly serving the youth of various communities. He had served as a Boy Scout Leader, Junior Achievement Advisor, Community College teacher, United States Naval Academy Information Officer and Scholarship Chairman of the Milwaukee Advertising Club. He was fond of saying that "children were his life" and was very proud of the accomplishments of his children. Tucker was also very active in his adopted Village of Greendale having worked prodigiously on the Middle School renovation, the building of the new Safety Center, and in preserving the historic Village Hall. He served the Village in the official capacity of Chairman of the Decorations Committee and Fund Drive Chairman of the Greendale Bicentennial Committee. He reported that his proudest moment was in leading the Independence Day Parade of returning Desert Storm veterans as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve. His military service spanned 40 years having enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960. Tucker was a cum laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after his first active duty tour.  His business career included advertising sales management at the, then, Milwaukee Journal, and 16 years as a shopping center manager at Southridge, Northridge and Mayfair Shopping Centers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He served as President of his own software company for the balance of his career developing the HOMEVALUE computer appraisal system and HOMESEARCH real estate sales system. While not active in any particular church, he was well known for his strong faith in God and often proselytized his belief to any and all who would listen. He attributed all that he accomplished solely to Faith in God.  In retirement, Bill wrote an autobiographical discovery of God, entitled "Miracles Made Possible" published in June, 2004. Bill is survived by his children Pamela, Penelope and Matthew, son-in-law Carter, sister Laurie, two grandchildren as well as other dear family and friends.Military Obituary "Commander William Thomas Tucker known as the "III", was born on Jun. 26, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wis. to William Thomas Tucker and Shirley (Holmes) Tucker. He was raised in Milwaukee, Wis. and attended Washington High School.He enlisted in the Air Force in 1960 at age 18, serving until he was discharged in 1964. During that time, CDR Tucker served as a Geodetic Surveyor building missile guidance sites all over Western Europe.  He then went on to study Journalism at the University of Wisconsin graduating cum laude.While in college, having risen to Buck Sergeant on active duty, he joined the Air Force Reserve.   After graduation he moved to the Inactive Reserve until 1975, when he received a Direct Commission to Lt., jg. in the Public Affairs community.Commander Tucker served 42 years in uniform, retiring in 2002 at age 60.  During his service, he served through 14 wars and military "police actions", and saw active duty during 4 of them -- Laos, Vietnam, Desert Shield/Desert Storm/Provide Comfort, and Iraqi Freedom/Proud Eagle/Enduring Freedom.  Commander Tucker.  Even though he volunteered for front line duty, he was assigned to Admiral's Staffs for all of them.  Commander Tucker was a community volunteer in many organizations over for 50 years throughout his adult life, including the Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, Milwaukee Advertising Club, Former College Internship Fund Drive Chairman, Milwaukee Press Club, Sigma Delta Chi Professional Journalistic Society, and as President of Mensa of Wisconsin.  Military volunteerism included: Congressman Paul Ryan's Veterans Advisory Board, Congressman Ryan's All Academies Nominations Committee, Senator Kohl's All Academies Nominations Committee, Senator Feingold's All Academies Nominations Committee, Congressman Kleczka's All Academies Nominations Committee, Senator Proxmire's All Academies Nominations Committee, Senator Kasten's All Academies Nominations Committee,  Recruiting District Assistance Council, and as a United States Naval Academy Information Officer. It was during his tenure as a United States Naval Academy Instructor in speech and public affairs that he was invited to join "Blue & Gold" (Information Officer) ranks in Wisconsin that he served voluntarily as the Deputy Director of his State.  Authorized one Appointee annually, Commander Tucker averaged 3 Appointees for each of his 19 years serving in that capacity.  When he began the program, there were 6 Officers.  Over the course of his Blue & Gold career, Commander Tucker built the organization to 44 volunteer senior officers, and earned the Superintendent's Award as the Top Reservist in the Midwest 3 times, and the Commandant's Award as the Top Reservist in Wisconsin 6 times.  At the last presentation, the Admiral remarked, "Bill, you've earned these awards every year you have served, but we have to spread the gold around a little bit." Commander Tucker earned the Navy Commendation Medal 3 times for his accomplishments in his war services,  as well as the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (2 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal (3 awards), Naval & Marine Corps Overseas Service Medal, Navy Recruiting Award, and others.  Note:  Commander Tucker was part of the team that won the Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil (Top national) Award winner for best military public relations event in the nation for 1997 (for the Re-Sailing of the USS CONSTITUTION "Old Ironsides" that drew 100 million TV viewers worldwide). He is survived by his children Pamela, Penelope and Matthew, son-in-law Carter, sister Laurie, two grandchildren as well as other dear family and friends.The Funeral will be held at Hartson Funeral Home at 11111 W Janesville Rd, Hales Corners, WI followed by burial with full military honors at Wisconsin Memorial Park cemetery.
